Bloomfield Township Public Library joined the ranks of America’s Star Libraries in the 2022 Library Journal Index of Public Library Service, winning four stars as a first-time honoree. Stars are awarded based on per capita circulation of physical and e-materials, library visits, program attendance, computer and Wi-Fi sessions, library website visits, and more. Library Director Tera Moon attributes this honor to the hard work and dedication of library staff and Board of Trustees, as well as the support and enthusiasm of the Bloomfield Township community.

Library Journal reports Star Libraries each year based on data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services Public Library Survey. The 2022 scores and ratings are based on FY20 data, a year that brought unprecedented change to public library service due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Statistical reporting periods vary widely among states and even among libraries within the same state, which meant that the impact of the pandemic on the data also varied widely. Across the United States, 258 libraries received stars, the lowest number of libraries scored ever. Bloomfield Township Public Library was one of 140 new or returning Star Libraries, outnumbering the 118 repeat libraries.

Bloomfield Township Public Library responded to the challenges of the pandemic by creating a virtual branch with live and on-demand programming and resources for residents of all ages, providing curbside service for safe delivery of materials, and providing access to thousands of e-books and e-audiobooks. The Library has since returned to normal service levels and hours, although virtual programming and curbside service remain an option for the convenience of our residents.
