With campaigning underway for the November 8 General Election, the Clerk's Office and Code & Ordinance Enforcement Division would like to remind residents and candidates about the guidelines for political signs.

All temporary signs must be placed on private property and not within the road right-of-way (ROW).  Suggested guidelines for ROW placement should be behind (on the property side) of utility markers, such as:

  • Sidewalks;
  • Utility poles;
  • Ditch lines;
  • Hydrants; or
  • If the above items are not present, a general setback of 15 feet from the road's edge is considered sufficiently out of the ROW.

Temporary signs should not be placed along the road frontage to cause a distraction, hazard, or visual obstruction to pedestrians or motor vehicles.  Temporary signs may be installed on private property only with the owner's consent.  Should you have additional questions, please contact the Clerk's Office at 248-433-7702 or the Ordinance Division at 248-594-2845.
