Bystander CPR can save lives before emergency services arrive.

This summer, many Township staff were trained in a vital skill: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillators. Or as they’re commonly known CPR and AED.  Led by Captain Mike Sova of the Fire Department, these trainings taught the basics of using basic first aid training in a medical emergency.  Acquiring these skills can keep blood and oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs until emergency crews arrive at a scene.

Communities with more trained individuals have higher survival rates in emergencies.  I’m excited to share that these training resources are also available to residents through our Fire Dept.  Upcoming dates include September 17, October 15, and November 4.  Call 248-433-7745; email fire_dept@bloomfieldtwpmi.gov; or visit bloomfieldtwpmi.gov/cpr for more information on how to register and see future dates as they’re added. Our dispatchers are trained to walk callers through CPR until the professionals arrive, but this skillset is so important for everyone.  It’s also a fantastic way for the public to interact with Township staff.

Another way for residents to interact with staff is our annual Open House event on September 28th! This popular event features lots of free fun for the whole family – from our fire dept.’s burn demonstration, to rides in police cars and plow trucks to the performance stage in our BCTV parking lot – there’s something for everyone.  I think it’s key for the community to interact with the staff that works to provide services.  Not only does it provide transparency and make for greater customer service, it builds a sense of community.
One more popular event each fall is the Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day on Saturday, October 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  More details on both events can be found in this newsletter on Pages 5 and 7.

If you can’t make these events, but want to meet our staff check out my monthly video series on the Township’s YouTube page. Each month, I’ve been visiting a new department to talk with staff about their role in the Township.  It’s a great way to learn about all the services each department provides and the many ways our Township works for you.

If you see me at the Open House on September 28th, please stop to say hello and introduce yourself!
