Dear Residents of Bloomfield Township:
As representatives of the Bloomfield Township Planning, Building, and Ordinance Department, we take our commitment to your safety and well-being seriously. Our mission is clear: to provide services with fairness, consistency, and the highest level of professionalism. We uphold the Township’s adopted plans, codes, and ordinances to create a safe, sustainable, and enjoyable community for both present and future residents.

Here’s how we fulfill our mission:

Building Department’s Role

  • Inspections: Our dedicated team conducts hundreds of residential and commercial inspections each week. From the foundation to the roof, we ensure that construction projects adhere to approved plans and comply with various codes and regulations. Whether it’s a new home, a commercial building, or a renovation, we’re there to verify safety and quality.
  • Continuous Learning: We stay informed and up-to-date by participating in local, regional, and state code official organizations. Our commitment to continuing education ensures that we remain knowledgeable about the latest codes and standards. This knowledge allows us to interpret and enforce regulations effectively.
  • Qualifications of Our Inspectors: Our inspectors are highly qualified professionals with expertise in various fields including architecture, engineering, and construction. They undergo rigorous training and certification processes to ensure their competence. Our inspectors are proud to offer:
    • Certification: Inspectors hold certifications from recognized bodies, demonstrating their proficiency in assessing structural integrity, electrical systems, plumbing, and more.
    • Experience: Many of our inspectors have extensive experience in the construction industry, having worked on diverse projects. Their practical knowledge enhances their ability to identify potential issues during inspections.
    • Code Expertise: Our team includes specialists who specialize in specific codes, such as the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), and National Electrical Code (NEC). They provide accurate interpretations and enforce compliance.
    • Communication Skills: Inspectors interact with builders, contractors, and homeowners daily. Their effective communication skills foster understanding and cooperation, ensuring smooth project progress.

Planning Department’s Role:
The Planning Department plays a critical role in ensuring that proposed developments align with the Township’s long-term vision. They review site plans, zoning regulations, and land use proposals. Their expertise ensures that new construction integrates seamlessly into the community fabric.

They collaborate with architects, developers, and residents to create sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and functional spaces. By considering factors like traffic flow, green spaces, and neighborhood character, they contribute to the overall well-being of our Township.

Ordinance Department’s Role:
The Ordinance Department enforces local laws and regulations. They oversee zoning ordinances, property maintenance codes, and land use restrictions.

Their work ensures that properties are used appropriately, minimizing conflicts and maintaining neighborhood harmony. They address issues related to setbacks, signage, and property boundaries.

By upholding these ordinances, they contribute to the safety, aesthetics, and overall quality of life in our community.

New Residential Codes in Effect 2024
In March 2024, Michigan adopted new residential codes for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing. These include the 2021 Mechanical and Plumbing codes and the 2023 NEC (National Electrical Code). These updated codes enhance safety, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

Remember, our goal is to create a community where you can thrive, knowing that your homes and businesses meet the highest safety standards. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to our Building Division.

Stay safe, Bloomfield Township!

Sincerely,

The Bloomfield Township Planning, Building, and Ordinance Division.
