In the latest episode of Coffee With Carrie, Cable and Community Relations Director Carrie LeZotte is joined by Bloomfield Township Treasurer Michael Schostak to discuss the Public Safety millage renewal that will appear on the August 6 Primary Election Ballot.
Although the current Public Safety millage does not expire until 2026, this measure is being added to the August ballot because there are no elections scheduled for 2025. This process will avoid the costs incurred by holding a special election just for this millage.
Schostak explains that this is one of three Township public safety millages, and the smallest of the three. “This is money that gets collected and goes directly into the Public Safety Fund to hire police officers, firefighter/EMTs, dispatchers, as well as the equipment they need to perform their jobs.” He also added, “this millage will keep about $4 million in our budget to be able to recruit and train our police officers, firefighter/EMTs, as well as hire additional personnel.”
Their discussion also includes:
4:51 – The need to recruit first responders due to attrition in the workforce.
7:20 – Difference between cities and townships.
15:38 – Township role with regards to road repair vs road construction.
