“There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.” – Rosalynn Carter

November is National Family Caregiver’s Month, and Bloomfield Township Senior Services wants to take this time to honor and show support to the vital caregivers in this community and beyond. There are well over 50 million family caregivers in this country. These gracious individuals provide care and assistance to family members with limitations due to illness, injury, or disability. Care recipients may have physical or cognitive disabilities, which means they need some level of assistance with daily living activities and other aspects of life.

Bloomfield Township Senior Services understands this daily burden and looks to emphasize the importance of family caregivers during this month of recognition.

Current Senior Services programming that provides resources and training for caregivers includes:

·   Companion Café - a program of welcoming events designed for individuals with memory challenges and their caregivers, offering a meaningful shared experience. Enjoy engaging games, music, art, and the warmth of camaraderie, along with light refreshments.

·    Friendship Club - a social model offering engaging, fail-free, and safe programming for older adults experiencing dementia or memory challenges. Friendship Club is dedicated to assisting people in maintaining their highest level of ability through social connection in an encouraging environment. This partnership in caregiving also enables families to keep their loved ones at home by providing much-needed respite.

·    Caregiver Support Group – a supportive gathering for caregivers that will educate about dementia, as well as highlight the changes that this disease can have on one’s daily life.

See for yourself how Friendship Club makes a difference at Creating Community at the Friendship Club.
