Free Digital Literacy Workshops

10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

On September 25, BCTV will offer its first free digital literacy workshop entitled “Back to School With BCTV.” A full slate of classes, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be offered by BCTV staff and special guests in a variety of topics that include filmmaking basics, Photoshop, podcasting and more.

The day will start with the BCTV Orientation, presented by Cable and Community Relations Director Carrie LeZotte. This orientation is a required first step in producing and/or volunteering with BCTV.

At 12pm, we will welcome Twisted Street BBQ to serve in our lot. We will provide their updated menu with pricing. Attendees are responsible to purchase their own meals.

What goes on at BCTV and how can you be a part of it? This is the first step in producing your own show as a community member, non-profit partner or anyone interested in being a guest on one of our shows. Learn about the mission of BCTV, how we’re funded (*not tax dollars!) and where we’re headed.

Intro to Documentary Filmmaking          11 a.m.

A survey of the documentary genre in film from 1896 - present day that showcases different techniques community producers can consider when creating their own content.

Promote Your Podcast with Canva          1 p.m. 
Amy McKaig, Digital Content Coordinator
Did you know you can make videos on Canva? Explore the features of a free Canva account so you can create graphics for use on YouTube, your social media platforms, and even on promotional items, to get more people watching and listening to your podcast.

Basics of Shot Composition for Storytelling         2 p.m. 
Phil Swantek, producer & educator
We will demonstrate the basic use of a camera (How to Focus, Zoom in and Out, Iris and White Balance, etc.) along with basic shot compositions. Compare different types of cameras.

Introduction to Photoshop         3 p.m. 
Bart Gioia, Technology Trainer at the Baldwin Public Library, special guest
Explore some of the capabilities of Photoshop to see why it is the industry-standard photo editing software for creative professionals. Learn some basic techniques you can apply to your own projects.

Podcasting Behind-the Scenes   4 p.m.
The Distracted Librarians, special guests from the Bloomfield Township Public Library
Be part of a live studio audience for the taping of an episode of The Distracted Librarians, one of the latest podcasts produced at BCTV. See what it’s like to be a host, guest, or one of the producers of a podcast. *Watching a production is the second step for prospective producers and community members interested in producing their own programming.
