With tax return season just around the corner, residents need to be aware of the latest scams involving fraudsters pretending to be representatives of the IRS. This recently developed agenda has mostly affected new taxpayers, but all taxpayers should be vigilant.
First, the IRS will NEVER make an initial inquiry via phone, text, or email. This is a sure sign of fraud. The IRS will ALWAYS contact you via physical mail first. From there, you should follow their instructions for future contact.
Most of the scams revolve around “phishing,” or getting vulnerable people to respond to unsolicited emails, text messages, and/or telephone calls. The IRS will NEVER initiate contact in this manner.
Additionally, the IRS recommends you create your own online profile at The Official IRS Website. This prevents cybercriminals from preemptively creating accounts with stolen information and accessing potential refunds.
You can get a complete list of available resources and advice at The IRS Identity Theft Guide.
The IRS does provide a list of recommended businesses and individuals that provide free tax preparation. You can find one near you via IRS Free Tax Prep.
If you do believe you are the victim of any cybercrime, please contact file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center or the Federal Trade Commission.
Finally, you are encouraged to freeze your credit at all three credit reporting agencies unless you are in the midst of a major purchase. Learn more at the USA Gov Contact Center.
